2009 Teen Multimedia Contest

18th Judicial District Attorney Carol Chambers is excited to announce the 2009 Teen Multimedia Contest! The contest theme will focus on Teen Dating Abuse awareness and prevention. One way to break the cycle of violence is to help teens reflect on and understand what a healthy relationship is, and encourage them to develop non-violent, respectful relationships with peers, family, and the community at large. This contest is an excellent opportunity for students to think critically and explore the issue of Teen Dating Abuse on a variety of intellectual levels.

 

 

Prizes:

Grand Prize: $1000 Scholarship and an iPod Classic

Second Prize: $500 Scholarship and an iPod Nano

Third Prize: $250 Scholarship and an iPod Shuffle

Winning essays, artwork, or videos will be featured on our website!

 

 

 

ENTRANT REQUIREMENTS

·       11th and 12th grade students.

·       Attending school in RURAL Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert, or Lincoln County.

 

 

CONTEST RULES

All entries MUST:

·         Pertain to the contest theme of teen dating abuse and its impact.

·         Be the original work of the student entering the contest. Entries must not plagiarize or violate copyrighted work of others.

·         Be appropriate and not contain indecent or obscene material as determined by the 18th Judicial DA’s Office.

·         Include a completed ENTRY FORM which includes the student’s name, school, grade, age, home address and phone number

·         Be received by The Office of the District Attorney, 7305 S. Potomac Street, Suite 300, Centennial, CO 80112, no later than Friday, January 9th, 2009 at 5:00pm.       

* Only one entry per person.  No group projects allowed. Additional category rules apply.

 

 

JUDGING CRITERIA

·         Concept and how well entry pertains to contest theme of teen dating abuse and its impact.

·         Demonstrates the importance of the issue; emphasizes helping those who are affected.

·         Evidence of subject knowledge; Informs the reader/audience.

·         Demonstrates use of research to support ideas conveyed.

·         Creativity

·         Quality of work, which includes the degree to which entry is well presented/written, well organized, clear, logical flow/sequence of ideas or information. Includes mechanics (spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc).

* Entries will be judged as a whole, not by category. Winners will be selected by how well they meet the judging criteria and follow the contest guidelines.

 

 

STUDENTS MAY SUBMIT ANY OF THE FOLLOWING:

 

·        WRITING

-Essay Only.

o     Must demonstrate critical thinking about the issue of teen dating abuse and its impact.

o     Must demonstrate that research has been done by citing within text.

o     Must be titled, typewritten, 12-pt font, double-spaced, with no less than 500 words and no more than 1,000 words.

o      Must include a bibliography page.

 

·        ART

- Acceptable forms include:

     Painting*        No larger than 18” x 24”.   Any medium may be used (EXCLUDING OIL PAINT), but must be completely dry before submitting.

     Drawing*       No larger than 18” x 24”.  Please use a fixative for pastel, charcoal, or oil pastel drawings.

     Sculpture*     Must not exceed 15 lbs and 12”x 12” x 12” in size.

- Artwork must be the original work of the student.

- Artwork that is traced, aided by computer art or magazine/newspaper cuttings (collages) will not be considered.

- Artwork with product names or company logos will not be considered.   Example: Pepsi

- Must do research and incorporate it into your work (see next bullet).

- Must submit a 1 pg (double-spaced, 12 pt font) description of the artwork. Briefly explain the medium chosen and why, describe how research has been incorporated into the artwork, and what the work represents (i.e. how it relates to the issue of Teen Dating Abuse and its impact)

- Must include a bibliography page.

*Participant must cover the cost of shipping and will not be reimbursed.

 

·        VIDEO/ AUDIO/ PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

- Finished video must be at least 30 seconds in length and no more than 60 seconds.

- Format can be CD, DVD, or VHS.

- Must be an original work of the student—NOT taken from video sharing sites such as YouTube, Google Video, etc.

- Support and guidance may be provided by teachers and other adults, however, the work must be created, shot, and edited by the student entering the contest. Group projects will not be accepted.

- All students under 18 that are in the video MUST have a signed RELEASE FORM by their parent or guardian.

- The use of copyrighted material in the video, such as music, is discouraged. The use of any such material must be acknowledged in the bibliography. Videos that contain visible product names or company logos (i.e. Pepsi) will not be considered.

- Must do research on the issue and incorporate it into the video.

- Must submit a 1 pg (double-spaced, 12 pt font) description of your work. Briefly explain why you chose this approach, describe how you have incorporated research into your audio/visual entry and how it relates to the issue of Teen Dating Abuse and its impact.

- Must include a bibliography page.

 

 

Essay and audio/visual entries will not be returned. Please keep a copy for yourself.  Original artwork will be returned upon request.

 

Entries are due no later than Friday, January 9th, 2009 at 5:00pm.  Contest winners will be notified shortly after and a special recognition ceremony will be held during National Teen Dating Violence Prevention and Awareness Week, Feb 2-9, 2009.  Winners, their parents, and school representatives will receive an invitation to the ceremony.
