Bad Check Restitution
The District Attorney's Office launched the Bad Check Restitution Program in early 2000. The program was developed to assist individuals and merchants with losses from bad checks. The program works in conjunction with American Corrective Counseling Services. First time offenders are given the opportunity to avoid criminal prosecution by attending a mandatory eight-hour intervention class and by paying restitution.
A bad check is eligible for the program if:
- The amount of the check is not greater than $20,000.00 (or multiple checks do not exceed this limit).
- The check was received in Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln County.
- A courtesy letter was sent to the check writer offering the writer ten days to make the check good.
- The complaint is submitted to the program no earlier than 31 days after the check was written and no more than 90 from the date on the check.
- A photo I.D. was recorded at the time of the transition.
