Criminal Investigations

The primary function of the Criminal Investigations Division for the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office is to support the prosecution team through interviews and further investigation after local law enforcement has filed cases with our office.

The Investigations division also assists the smaller law enforcement agencies when requested with more complex investigations such as economic crime cases, homicides and officer involved shootings.

There are 21 full time employees that include:

  • principal investigators
  • senior investigators
  • paralegals
  • a forensic computer examiner
  • a secretary

All of the investigators are certified peace officers in the State of Colorado with an average of 26 years of experience in the division. They have state, local and federal law enforcement backgrounds.

Some investigators have specialized skill sets:

  • Trained to conduct polygraph examinations
  • Certified Fraud Examiner or CFE credentials
  • Expertise in document examination
  • Firearms instruction

Members of the division (which is supervised by Chief Investigator Michael Knight) are on-call at all times. They also participate in the 18th Judicial District Critical Response Team which responds to officer involved shooting cases in the district when the team is requested by the involved law enforcement agency.

The Investigations division is housed in two locations with the bulk of the investigators located in the Centennial office while additional investigators are located in the Douglas County office.
