Special Victims Unit
This unit prosecutes all felony crimes against children and those who are classified by law as being "at-risk," namely the elderly, and individuals with physical or mental disabilities. This includes child abuse and assault on the at-risk, sexual assault on children and the at-risk, incest, cases involving child pornography, and failure to register as a sex offender.
Statistics show that same sex pedophiles will have an average of over 100 victims before they are caught. Heterosexual pedophiles will have an average of over 70 victims before they are caught. These prolific criminals leave a trail of devastation that has an incalculable impact on the community. Not everyone who commits sexual assaults on children is a true pedophile, but everyone who commits a sexual assault on a child does cause a devastating impact that may never be overcome by the victim. Many of the criminals we see have been victims of child abuse and/or child sexual assault.
The office firmly believes that vigorously prosecuting these cases and ensuring long-term monitoring of the offenders as well as putting intractable perpetrators behind bars for as long as possible prevents crime, mental illness, dysfunctional families and a myriad of other problems for the community.
At this time, our Special Victims Unit attracts some of the best trial attorneys in our office who are extremely effective. We have added an attorney to specialize in juvenile sex offenses against children and now have a total of 7 attorneys who specialize in this area. We have also started an internet sting operation in our office in which we use the internet to catch sex offenders who are trying to meet up with juveniles through chat rooms. Finding and arresting these offenders before they can actually molest a child is the best way to take them off the streets and prevent these crimes.
