Meet The DA
About Carol Chambers
I was raised in a small town in Ohio with three brothers and one sister. My father was the pastor of a small Presbyterian Church, my grandfather worked for the Board of National Missions for the Presbyterian Church, and my three uncles were Presbyterian ministers as well, so needless to say, my childhood centered around the church which was our extended family.
When I finished high school, I went to Texas Christian University to get a nursing degree, and then moved to Denver where I put myself through the University of Denver College of Law by working in the Emergency Department of, what was then, Denver General Hospital and as a temp/floater at various area hospitals.
During the 2 years, I worked in the ER at Denver General, I saw the results of homelessness, poverty, drug abuse, sudden and unexpected death, Alzheimer's, suicide, disabilities, mental illness, chronic disease, severe alcohol addiction, victimization, violent crime, sexual assault, child abuse, elder abuse, and driving under the influence. We served an enormously diverse patient population and I came away with an invaluable education in many aspects of life with which I had no prior experience or even exposure.
I attended law school at the University of Denver where I received the American Jurisprudence Award in Ethics. In my last year, I interned in the Denver District Attorneys Office where I met my husband, Nathan, who was a Denver prosecutor for eight years.
After law school, I clerked for Judge Donald P. Smith at the Colorado Court of Appeals, and then worked at the law firm of Long & Jaudon, P.C. where I practiced medical malpractice defense. I thoroughly enjoyed civil practice, but I wanted to be a prosecutor and try cases so I began working at the District Attorneys Office for the 18th Judicial District in April of 1990.
I have now been a prosecutor in this District Attorneys Office for over 19 years. I have worked in all four of our counties: Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln and with all of our 23 police agencies. I have prosecuted hundreds of cases from traffic offenses to homicides. From 1997 until 2001, I specialized in prosecuting crimes committed against children. In 1998, I was appointed Chief Deputy District Attorney and created our Special Victims Unit to support prosecutions involving child victims, the elderly and other vulnerable at-risk members of our community.
In the interest of full disclosure, in 2002, I contracted breast cancer and am pleased to say that at this point I am healthy, cancer free, and an almost eight-year survivor.
In 2004, I was honored to be elected to the position of District Attorney for the 18th Judicial District. Since taking office, I have been working to implement programs that will benefit and protect the community, assist victims, prevent crime, and increase sentences for criminals who commit crimes in Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties.
Although I spend most of my time now as a manager and administrator, I continue to work in the courtroom in the county and district courts, do jury trials, and talk with victims. It is important to me to stay in touch with what is happening in each division of the office and in each courtroom of our six courthouses.
Please read about our many programs on this website. Thank you for the privilege of serving as the District Attorney for the 18th Judicial District.
