January 26, 2012 - 2nd man who attempted to rob two Aurora liquor stores in botched robberies found guilty of Attempted Aggravated Assault

People of the State Of Colorado vs. Henry Lee James Jr.

Case Number – 2010CR2296

For Immediate Release: January 26, 2012

2nd man who attempted to rob two Aurora liquor stores

in botched robberies found guilty of Attempted Aggravated Robbery

Centennial, CO. – An Arapahoe County District Court jury found Henry Lee James Jr., 39, guilty of two counts of Attempt to Commit Aggravated Robbery, one count of Conspiracy to Commit Aggravated Robbery and four counts of Felony Menacing today, after a 3 - day jury trial and 1 ½ hours of deliberation.

On September 22, 2010, Aurora Police Officers were dispatched to G&E Liquors, on East Illiff Ave., in the city of Aurora on a robbery call.  Two men entered the liquor store with masks covering their faces.  James pulled out a gun and pointed it at store clerk.  In response to the threat, the clerk then pulled out a gun and pointed it at the "would-be” robbers.  The two men then ran out of the store, firing at least one shot into the ceiling.  The entire incident was recorded on video.

Several minutes later, officers responded to Tower Landing Liquors, located on South Tower Road, in the city of Aurora.  Again, two masked men entered the store.  One of the robbers pulled out a gun and pointed it at two store clerks and a customer.  When the armed robber looked away, the store clerk pulled out a gun and fired twice at the robber.  The clerk then ran out behind the counter and fired twice at James’ co-defendant, Marcel McMichael who was running out of the front door.  This incident was also recorded on video.

Sentencing is set for May 11, 2012.

On January 9, 2012, James’ co-defendant, Marcel McMichael was sentenced to 44 years in the Department of Corrections.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Dan Plattner and Senior Deputy District Attorney Vicki Klingensmith prosecuted the case on behalf of the District Attorney’s Office, 18th Judicial District.  Detective Mark Yacano investigated the case on behalf of the Aurora Police Department.
