Two defendants in an Aurora animal cruelty case have reached plea agreements and their cases are set for sentencing.

Janette Solano, 49, pleaded guilty to one count of animal cruelty, a Class 1 misdemeanor, under the terms of a deferred judgment and sentence. The judge will decide whether to accept the guilty plea and deferred sentence Sept. 17 at 11 a.m. in Courtroom 301.

Frederick Manzanares, 51, pleaded guilty to two counts of animal cruelty, both Class 1 misdemeanors. Sentencing is set for Oct. 16 at 10:30 a.m. in Courtroom 304. Manzanares faces up to 18 months in jail on each count.

The dog that was abused, a male Akita mix named Bubba, was recovered by animal protection officials. He is in the care of the Aurora Animal Shelter.

Manzanares has forfeited any ownership rights to the dog. At the conclusion of the criminal proceedings, the Aurora Animal Shelter will conduct a standard behavioral assessment of the dog and determine appropriate next steps.
