Antoin Griego

Man convicted of multiple felonies after shooting at private security officer patrolling neighborhood in Aurora

An Arapahoe County jury convicted Antoin Griego, 25, of shooting a gun at a security officer patrolling a neighborhood and shattering the victim’s back window.

Around 4 a.m. on January 30, 2021, police in Aurora were dispatched to a shots fired call near E. Wyoming Place and E. Wyoming Circle. Fortunately, the victim was unharmed. During the interview with officers on-scene, the victim stated the alleged suspect vehicle had just driven past the area.

An officer quickly located a black SUV matching the description of the suspect vehicle parked nearby with two people inside. Officers immediately conducted a high-risk stop. The driver, Antoin Griego, and the passenger, Terry Roebuck were detained. During a search of both suspects and the vehicle, officers located small baggies of Cocaine and Methamphetamine on the floorboard of the car. A loaded pistol and extra ammunition were located in the glove box. Marijuana was also found on the driver’s side area, in violation of a current protection order prohibiting the possession or consumption of alcohol or controlled substances. Officers also seized multiple pills on Griego and from inside the car he was driving. Testing of the almost 300 pills confirmed they were Fentanyl. Both men had large amounts of cash on them as well.

On March 10, 2023, a jury convicted Griego on the following charges:

Attempted Assault 1-Extreme Indifference

Statute: 18-3-202(1)(c)

Class 4 Felony

Violent Crime-Used Weapon

Sentence Enhancer (SE)

Illegal Discharge of a Firearm

Statute: 18-12-107.5

Class 5 Felony

Prohibited Use of a Weapon

Statute: 18-12-106(1)(b)

Class 1 Misdemeanor

Controlled Substance-Special Offender w/Firearm

Statute: 18-8-407(1)(d)(II)

Class 1 Drug Felony

Controlled Substance Possession w/Intent to Distribute (2 Counts)

Statute: 18-18-405(1),(2)(c)(I)

Class 3 Drug Felony

“DNA testing of the gun helped us identify Mr. Griego as the shooter,” Deputy District Attorney Lauren Raible said. “The defendant’s DNA was also found on both magazines in the vehicle as well.”

Analysis of the bullet found on scene and the gun found in Mr. Griego’s possession confirmed it was the weapon used to shoot at the victim.

A motive was never disclosed as to why Griego decided to shoot at another driver who was assisting with overnight neighborhood security in her vehicle. However, the victim did state she drove past the suspect vehicle prior to the shooting.

“We’re fortunate that the victim was not injured in this incident,” Deputy District Attorney Colleen Greer said. “Based on the evidence, it’s clear Mr. Griego and his passenger were up to no good that night.”

Griego is scheduled to be sentenced on June 20, 2023. He faces a prison sentence of up to 32 years.

His co-defendant, Terry Roebuck, pleaded guilty to a Class 2 Drug Felony for Controlled Substance Possession with Intent to Distribute. He will be sentenced Friday, March 17, 2023.

“Given Mr. Griego’s criminal past, he should not have been in possession of a firearm to begin with,” District Attorney John Kellner said. “We will aggressively prosecute offenders who distribute illegal, deadly narcotics and engage in gun violence in our jurisdiction.”
