Brauchler travels to Malaysia to give human rights training

District Attorney George Brauchler, a colonel and military judge in the Colorado Army National Guard, recently travelled to Malaysia on behalf of the Department of Defense to conduct human rights-related training. Brauchler worked with members of the Malaysian Navy, teaching courses on use of force, gender violence and human trafficking under the auspices of the Defense Institute of International Legal Studies (DIILS).

DIILS is the “lead DoD security cooperation resource for global legal engagement and capacity-building with international defense sector officials” and regularly works with militaries around the globe.

“I have spent a career doing nearly everything in military law, and I was happy be able to work with our partner countries on the important work of upholding the law of armed conflict,” said Brauchler. “The United States is a global democracy leader, and we are actively engaged in working with our military partners to uphold international standards.”

Brauchler’s commitment to service extends beyond his own actions and includes the Office of District Attorney. During the hiring process, he actively seeks out qualified applicants with military service. There are currently 17 of these patriots on staff, including eight currently active in Guard or Reserve. Our office proudly supports our prosecutors while they deploy to Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait and elsewhere. Two of our prosecutors are currently on active duty.

“As a veteran of the Iraq war, and as member of the Colorado Army National Guard, I know well the value these women and men bring to any organization, especially one dedicated to upholding our Constitution and seeking justice” Brauchler said.

In 2017 the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office was awarded the prestigious Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, the first DA’s office to be honored in the 22-year history of the award.

“I am proud to have created the most veteran- and military-friendly office in government,” Brauchler said. “We do all we can to ensure our office welcomes and encourages Guard and Reserve members in their service to our great nation.”

District Attorney George Brauchler, who also serves as a colonel in the Colorado Army National Guard, has added another title and job: Military Judge.

COL Brauchler successfully completed the 62d Military Judges Course at the Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School in Charlottesville, VA. He is now certified to serve as a military judge.

The three-week intensive course is an invitation-only, multi-service training including active duty, reserve, and national guard judge candidates from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard.

The Colorado General Assembly in 2018 updated the Colorado Code of Military Justice to provide for courts martial authority, necessitating the creation of a position of military judge. Brauchler will be the first military judge for the Colorado National Guard. COL Brauchler has also been selected for Army War College, a military education prerequsite to greater potential leadership opportunities.

District Attorney Brauchler is proud of his military service and strives to encourage others to serve: Three members of his office are currently on active duty, with five others actively drilling in the Guard or Reserve. The U.S. Department of Defense in 2017 honored the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office with the prestigious Freedom Award for support of employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve. It is the first District Attorneys Office in the country to receive the award.

“It has been a tremendous honor to serve my country and the citizens of Colorado, here and abroad, in uniform for my adult life,” Brauchler said. “I am humbled to be selected as a military judge to ensure that those in service are afforded due process when accused of criminal behavior.”

D.C. ceremony presents DA’s office with Freedom Award

At a ceremony in Washington, D.C., on Friday, District Attorney George Brauchler and members of his office received the prestigious Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award.

Fifteen awards were presented by Deputy Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan. The 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office is the first prosecutor’s office to be honored in the 22-year history of the award.

This award is given annually to employers for their support of employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve. Nominees represent large and small employers from almost every industry, as well as from state and local governments. A national selection board comprised of senior Department of Defense officials and business leaders select the award recipient, who “have gone above and beyond federal requirements in support of their military employees.”

This year there were 3,064 nominations nationwide. Among the 30 finalists, nine public sector employers competed to win the award in that category.

An organization can win the award only one time.

“I am proud to have created the most veteran- and military-friendly office in government, and I thank the award committee for recognizing that,” Brauchler said. “We do all we can to ensure our office welcomes and encourages Guard and Reserve members in their service to our great nation.”

The nomination for the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office cited the office for going above and beyond the requirements of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) and providing exceptional benefits, compensation, leave practices, and support of all its active military members.

18th Judicial District Attorney Office is first DA’s office ever to be honored with Department of Defense Freedom Award

The Office of the District Attorney, 18th Judicial District has been awarded the 2017 Freedom Award by the U.S. Department of Defense. It is the first time in the 22-year history of the award that it has gone to a District Attorney’s Office.

“This is an unprecedented and tremendous honor of which I am very proud. The work that this office does in supporting the men and women who choose to serve our country in the armed forces deserves recognition,” said District Attorney George Brauchler. “I am proud to have created the most veteran- and military-friendly office in government, and I thank the award committee for recognizing that. We do all we can to ensure our office welcomes and encourages Guard and Reserve members in their service to our great nation.”

The award will be presented Aug. 25 at a ceremony at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

The nomination for the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office cited the office for going above and beyond the requirements of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) and providing exceptional benefits, compensation, leave practices, and support of all its active military members.

“From the day I was first sworn in as district attorney, I set a goal of creating the most veteran friendly government office around.  This award is recognition of the accomplishment of that goal,” Brauchler said. “As a veteran of the Iraq war, and as a colonel in the Colorado Army National Guard, I know well the value these men and women bring to any organization.”

The office’s preference for — and recruitment of — military members is best demonstrated by the growing number of actively drilling Guard and Reserve service members.  The DA’s Office has 85 prosecutors, and at the time DA Brauchler was elected, the office had no actively drilling Guard or Reserve employees. Today, including DA Brauchler, there are eight employees serving in the Guard or Reserve. All of those service members have served on active duty at least once since Sept. 11, 2001.

18th Judicial DA’s office finalist for national award

The Office of the District Attorney, 18th Judicial District has been selected as a finalist for the 2017 Freedom Award.

This award is given annually by the Department of Defense to employers for their support of employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve. Nominees represents large and small employers from almost every industry, as well as from state and local governments. A national selection board comprised of senior Department of Defense officials and business leaders select the award recipients.

This year there were 3,064 nominations nationwide. Among the 30 finalists, nine public sector employers are competing to win the award in that category.

The Office is nominated for going above and beyond the minimum requirements of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) and provides exceptional benefits, compensation, leave practices, and support of all its active military members. District Attorney George H. Brauchler publicly supports the veterans and service members in the office.

The office provides preference to members of the Guard and Reserve when hiring new employees; if equally qualified candidates apply for the same position, the service member is always selected for employment.

The office’s preference for—and recruitment of—military members is best demonstrated by the growing number of actively drilling Guard and Reserve service members. The DA’s Office has 85 prosecutors, and at the time DA Brauchler was elected, the office had no actively drilling Guard or Reserve employees. Today, there are eight employees serving in the Guard or Reserve, including seven prosecutors. All of those service members have deployed at least once since Sept. 11, 2001.

“It goes without saying that the men and women who chose to serve our country in the armed forces deserve our thanks and support. But I know from experience that those in the Guard and Reserve have taken on a special commitment,” said District Attorney George H. Brauchler. “They have agreed to integrate their service into a world of jobs and careers that aren’t always flexible and appreciative. It behooves all of us to do everything we can to support them in their commitment to the safety and protection of our communities, and that includes the civilian workplace.”

He added: “Few people come better equipped to serve their communities in such a significant and sensitive area as that of justice. I am proud to have created the most veteran- and military-friendly office in government. We do all we can to ensure our office welcomes and encourages Guard and Reserve members in their service to our great nation.”
